What to Expect
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber. We recommend a duration of 75 minutes per session. During the therapy, the atmospheric pressure is increased higher than normal, which allows your lungs to gather more oxygen than would be possible breathing pure oxygen at normal air pressure. Up to four patients can sit comfortably in the chamber at the same time. Users may experience a feeling of fullness in the ears, similar to what is felt during airplane takeoff and landing, which can be relieved by yawning or swallowing.
Contraindications
While hyperbaric oxygen therapy is generally safe, it is not suitable for everyone. Contraindications include individuals with untreated pneumothorax (collapsed lung) and certain types of ear or sinus issues. It should be avoided by individuals with certain lung diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma, as the increased pressure can cause complications. Pregnant women should only undergo HBOT if the benefits outweigh the risks, as determined by a healthcare provider. Those with a history of seizures, high fever, or specific types of chemotherapy or radiation therapy should also consult their healthcare provider before undergoing HBOT.
